about Anthea Hamilton's interview

Anthea Hamilton gives an example of how a gallery director interacted with the space of Anthea’s exhibition. I think this is interesting and unique.She mentioned that her work is situated with something quite bodily as well as for a visual thing. The words make me think more widely about the connections between the spaces and the art work ,the viewers and the spaces, as well as the artwork and the viewers. Getting fully use of these connections can really create more possibilities and improve the quality of the artwork.

She would redo the work when she felt that the work is not quite work in the exhibition space because of the dynamics of the room. I thing this is an important reflective part of the progress of creating artwork ,making the work to fit a particular space better.

She selects the materials and objects that need to have a sense of openness or blankness which can be really suitable for the work . From that I reflected that I should use something’s reasonable enough after considering the shapes ,the functions and many other potential aspects.

about Sarah Sze's interview

At the very first beginning Sarah Sze said that the improvisation is crucial. And she wants the work to be sort of experience of something live. This is the very thing that I would like to go deep into. I do love the to do sort of art that working on site. To create something out of the plan and discover some new ways to approach or even go beyond the aim do make me feel excited. I would like to get more widely open to think and do the work.

She mentioned that the very core of her work is thinking about the edge between life and art, I think that this is the thing artist Anthea Hamilton also mentioned in her interview(she tries to share with people that can live with an art object the same way he/she lives with the normal objects.the normal objects. ) From the video I can see that there are wool lines going through the objects in Sarah’s artwork, I think the lines visualized the connection between the object and the people who use the object in their life. And she set the daily normal objects with the unfamiliar objects. Things like these make the display artistic and interesting.

Sarah makes the viewer to move in and out in her artwork, to experience sort of discovery that she actually has. From this I learnt that interaction is an important aspect that might be considered when making the art pieces.

NICHOLAS HLOBO

South African artist Nicholas Hlobo creates works on paper, sculptures, and performances that activate the associative potential of materials such as ribbon, leather, and rubber. Laden with innuendo and wordplay, Hlobo's works fluidly traverse topics related to identity—including gender, sexuality, and ethnicity—anchored in the artist's position as a descendent of Xhosa, one of South Africa's largest indigenous communities, to challenge prescribed perceptions of his country.

Born in Cape Town in 1975, Hlobo graduated with a degree in Fine Art from Johannesburg's Technikon Witwatersrand in 2002, developing his practice in post-apartheid South Africa. After turning to art in his late twenties, the artist quickly rose to international recognition. Hlobo's materially charged works involve cutting and piecing materials together, with the repetitious 'baseball' stitch visible across their surface.

The materials used in Hlobo's practice are often playfully juxtaposed to enhance their masculine or feminine properties, drawing attention to gender binaries. Rubber, for instance, references automobiles and their emblem in South Africa as a masculine status symbol, along with condoms, and 'gender subculture in the context of sadomasochism'. Ribbons and embroidery flicker through his stitched works, bringing a contrast of warmth and softness generally associated with female handiwork.

Notes about the research of NICHOLAS HLOBO

Nicholas’s work is always about the identity: like the themes of gender, sexuality, and where does he come from. The themes are impressive to me because it is sharp, powerful，and with strong characteristics.

From the theme he chose the materials that really fit the ideas he wants to convey. Using the materials like ribbons to represent the feminine part and the rubber to represent the masculine part. And he also uses the objects like the leather found in his hometown ,which to identify himself as a descendent of Xhosa in South Africa. He even named his work in Xhosa language because he wants to let people know more about this culture.This really inspired me that I should focus more on the culture of my root——where do I come from. And thus I can have my personal and special language and theme to communicate with the viewers.

The themes, the materials and how he work with them formed his iconic artwork.

His visual language is really impressive and meaningful：The soft materials such as ribbons ,conflict with something represent the power ,like the rubber and leather. The lines and shapes of the work are wild, I can feel the energy and the strength from them.

I love the work Ingubo Yesizwe 2008 . It is about artist’s thoughts of his nation, South Africa. He created ahuge headless beast sewed with leather. I feel that the beast is powerful but it may have no idea where to go ,just like how the artist feels about his nation: becoming stronger but lack of the way to develop further.

Nicholas even did performance art with his work on the exhibitions, he said that he “love the idea of things that are set in a stage between dying and living”. I think it really creative because he managed to present his work better. This kind of fluid art is also what I want to try.

I do remember how he put on one of his work which looks like a jacket contains a bag ,and carried the art piece walking around the gallery and talked to strangers. He explained that this work is about people should live their life with all of the past good or toxic moment (like a baggage of their own) to become a better person. And also, this is the work that tells people who come from the same place as Nicholas that never forget the baggage on their life.

After watching the video Anthea Hamilton Reimagines Kettle's Yard , I learnt that she was trying to find a way with more natural materials from the experience that how she felt about the natural object around her when she was on her way toward the library. The natural objects suddenly make she feel like there is a sense that “It’s about kind of sharing them and them looking at them and understanding that these things are remarkable...” Then she tried to share this kind of experience with the viewers. From her reflective thoughts ,I think I should focus more on the common things and the daily objects around me and deeply feel their existence in such spaces. Then try to show and communicate this kind of experience to the viewer.

She also mentioned that she see collaboration as a conversation, and try to leave the collaborative work an open progress. This inspired me that the team work should be more wide open to explore the potential developments instead of giving a plan and carry it out.

I was impressed about what she tries to explore deeply : that people can live with an art object the same way he/she lives with the normal objects. And this is how she tries to share with the viewers. The concept can lead me to explore further like creating art work which can function in the daily life as well as being displayed .

I love her work named The squash and how she present this work( in Tate Britain, 2018).

The pieces she created are colorful and interesting.And I think the artist gives life to the work piece by collaborating with the performance artists who put the work on their bodies and performed with them.

The performers combined with the art piece together then they formed a new artwork that make the human be seen as an object, which I think it is an interesting angle to observe and reflect . At the same time the performers are given small limitation to perform in the art pieces , this can explore more possibilities of the work.

I also noticed that the exhibition space is like a pool or a water sink, which I think, break the fence between audience and the exhibits. This provides more connection between the viewers and the artwork.
